App2Usb What is it good for?

Sry when its a stupid question but what is App2Usb and why use it?
Since Firmware 4.5 Sony offers the possibility to use external drive to copy and install games on it.
So why we need somethink like App2Usb?
Or is this only important for Firmware 4.05?
